The Netscout AM/A1150 AirMagnet WiFi Analyzer is the industry standard WiFi analysis and monitoring software tool for mobile monitoring, auditing and WiFi troubleshooting enterprise WiFi networks. WiFi Analyzer PRO makes the analysis of roaming simply by providing key information on one screen. Capturing data on multiple channels allows analysis of a device’s roam from one AP and channel to another, so you can see both sides of a roaming event. I have always been a huge fan of AirMagnet (strictly speaking here, the WiFi Analyzer PRO product, but I also use the Enterprise and Spectrum XT products from time to time as well), and remember the slap-in-the-forehead feeling I got when they put the first handheld version in my hands what seems like ages ago. This was the first really good mobile diagnostic tool for wireless LANs, and the latest version (9.0) announced last week is light years from that first release while remaining true to the original mission - making the analysis and troubleshooting of wireless LANs easy. The company also has a good site-survey tool (which I occasionally use for post-installation surveys) and a VoFi Analyzer, which is clearly of increasing importance.

There are, of course dozens of functions in AMWFAP 9, and I have occasionally heard criticisms that the wide range of function makes the product complex. Sure, it's a Swiss army knife of sorts, and does require a bit of experimentation (or perhaps some training) in order to fully appreciate the range and power here. I think, however, that most users with a working technical knowledge of Wi-Fi should be able to be productive in fairly short order.

The new version includes a couple of new features of note. The first of these is roaming analysis, which to this point has been a particularly time-consuming process in most cases. The fundamentally client-centric, non-deterministic nature of Wi-Fi roaming has often driven me crazy, with analysis of sticky clients and such ultimately involving packet traces (which WiFi Analyzer can of course do) and a pocket calculator. This new functionality, though, is so much easier, reducing analysis to a single screen that includes latency computation (put away the calculator) and performance analysis. More smacks in the forehead are appropriate here.

The other big new feature in AMWFAP 9 is multi-adapter support, allowing the connection of up to three Wi-Fi adapters (I used three Proxim 8494's for my testing exercise). Installation here involves velcroing a USB hub to the lid of a notebook, a bit kludgey, but it works. And there's no other way; I often wish that Engim had been successful with their three-channels-on-a-single-chip Wi-Fi component, and perhaps this technique will make a comeback now that multiple-channel scanning is important not just for Layer-2 functions, but also for spectral analysis and assurance as well. Free vst noise removal. Regardless, being able to monitor three channels in real time without the need for scanning is great, but I wish interference analysis worked with multiple adapters. Maybe later. There's also a new dashboard screen, and a connection audit tool, among other changes and additions.

Overall, I'd highly recommend taking a look at this latest release, and certainly upgrading if you're already a customer. My key theme for this year has been converting operating expense (expensive) into capital expense (cheap) by improving the productivity of operations staff with the right technologies and products. And we have here one of the best examples yet of this strategy in action.

If the topic of Wi-Fi performance (and especially the performance of Wi-Fi roaming) is of interest to you, and it should be, IMHO, AirMagnet is hosting a Webinar covering this and a few other related subjects on 18 November. You can see the details and sign up here. We'll also explore minimizing total cost of ownership (TCO) via the application of the right tools and techniques, and I hope you can attend.
